Pakistan’s former President, General Pervez Musharraf has passed away in Dubai

He supported the US "war on terror" after 9/11 despite domestic opposition by giving U.S. forces ground and air access into landlocked Afghanistan to chase down AL Qaeda militants.

General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan’s former

President and the 7th Chief of Army Staff has died at Dubai American Hospital at his age 79, after a prolonged illness of Amyloidosis, on

February 5,2023.


General Pervez Musharraf’s body will be

repatriated to Pakistan via a special jet that will leave for Pakistan at 7 pm (local time), said the diplomatic resources.

 

The senior military officials expressed their “heartfelt condolences” on the “death of General Pervez Musharraf.”


“May Allah bless the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family,” they said. 

 

 

Pakistan’s prime minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed his “condolences and sympathy to the family” of the

former leader in a statement on Sunday Feb 5, 2023.


Imran Khan, Former prime minister expressed his grief by saying “Our prayers and condolences go to his

family and we share their grief.”


General Pervez Musharraf, seized power in a coup in 1999 and completed the responsibilities of his presidency between 2001 and 2008.

 

During his presidency, he has faced numerous courageous assassination attempts, and found himself on the

front line of the struggle between militant Islamist and the West.

 

He supported the US "war on terror" after 9/11 despite domestic opposition by giving U.S. forces ground and air access into landlocked Afghanistan to chase down AL Qaeda militants.


In 2008 he suffered defeat in the polls and left the country after six months.


In 2013, he returned to Pakistan and tried to contest the election, but was arrested and charged with high

treason, even was sentenced to death in absentia only for the decision to be overturned less than a month

later. Although the death sentence was later annulled by the Lahore High Court.


In 2016, he left Pakistan and was living in exile in Dubai to seek medical treatment until the day of his death.
