7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands in New Zealand

There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the M 7.1 earthquake in the Southern Kermadec Islands.

An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck the Kermadec Islands region in New Zealand on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).


The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles) USGS added.
 
Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the epicenter; the agency

says in a separate statement.

 

But NZ Civil Defense said, "There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the M7.0 earthquake in the

Southern Kermadec Islands. Remember, if an earthquake is long or strong, get gone," it said in a statement. 
the country’s Bureau of Meteorology said in a tweet, “there is no tsunami threat to Australia.”
