South Korea welcomes the release of North Korean Human Rights Enforced Disappearance Report by the "UN Office for Human Rights in North Korea”

South Korea hopes that the report will contribute to raising the international community's interest in the poor human rights situation in NK and the issue of enforced disappearances by NK.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of

Unification, the Ministry of Justice, and the

Ministry of National Defense jointly announced

that they welcome the March 28 report presen

ted by the United Nations Office for Human

Rights in North Korea, dealing with enforced

disappearances and abductions by North Korea, under the theme of “Wounds that will not heal.”

 

 

The report describes the current status of forced disappearances and abductions by North Korea, the back

ground of enforced disappearances such as abductions, and the economic, social, and psychological diffi-

culties experienced by the victims. In addition, it recommends that North Korea acknowledge the occurrence of enforced disappearances, implement measures to stop the violation, promptly repatriate the kidnapped

victims, establish full responsibility for the crime of enforced disappearances, and comprehensively compen-

sate the victims.


The South Korean government urged North Korea to take necessary steps to implement the recommen-

dations of this report and to expand cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms.

 

The South Korean government welcomes this report by the UN Office for Human Rights in North Korea, and hopes that the report will contribute to raising the international community's interest in the poor human rights situation in North Korea and the issue of enforced disappearances by North Korea.
