Approximately 20,000 illegal immigrants, includ

ing 12,833 crackdowns and 12,163 voluntary

departures has been investigated by the Ministry of Justice, operated a regular illegal stay crack

down system, since the beginning of this year,

said the Ministry of Justice on Wednesday May 3,2023.

The government's joint crackdown was conducted by the Ministry of justice, the National Police Agency,

Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Ministry of Employment and Labor, Korea Coast Guard, etc. with a focus on areas that can create great social harm, such as entertainment establishments, industries that

encroach on people's jobs, such as courier services and delivery agencies, and companies that regularly and

frequently hire illegally employed foreigners.

During the last two months, a total of 9,291 foreigners residing illegally in Korea including 1,701 illegal employers and 12 illegal employment brokers were caught and investigated by the immigration during the operation of 1st joint governmental crackdown started from March 2 to April 30, 2023.  

A total of 7,578 undocumented foreign workers were caught during the joint governmental task, 6,863 people were forced to leave the country, and about 208 people were fined and the rest are under investigation,

reported by the ministry of justice.

A total of 1,701 illegal employers and 12 illegal employment agents were fined by the ministry of justice after

investigation on doing illegal activities. The search warrants were issued and strict measures were taken in

response to the acts of refusing crackdowns or arranging illegal employment, such as 9 people were arrested and 24 people were investigated without detention.

In addition, 147 times the patrol inspection activities were conducted that allowed 5,247 illegal aliens to voluntarily leave the country during the government joint crackdown period.

Han Dong-hoon, the Minister of Justice said, “Since the basic premise of a flexible immigration management policy is a strict and predictable stay order, we will continue to strive to establish a strict stay order, including

crackdowns on illegal stays.”
