South Korea reiterated continuous humanitarian assistance to Ukraine

The Korean government will continue its diplomatic, economic and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine in close cooperation with the international community.

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol while his visit to Japan as a G7 observer held meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who unexpectedly attended G7 summit at Grand prince hotel in Hiroshima on May 21, 2023.

 

Both the leaders exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine and discussed support plans with each other.

 

Korean President Yoon reiterated his position of solidarity and support for Ukraine saying, “the Republic of

Korea values freedom, international solidarity, and a normative international order.”

 

“The Korean government will continue its diplomatic, economic and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine in

close cooperation with the international community”, Yoon added.

 

Ukrainian President Zelensky, in response, expressed his gratitude to the Korean government for its continued support to ensure the freedom of the Ukrainian people in solidarity with the free world.


President Zelensky said, “he hoped that the war in Ukraine would end as soon as possible and cooperation

with Korea would be further expanded to achieve peace.”

 

Through close consultations between the Korean and Ukrainian governments, the Korean government expressed gratitude for the timely provision of humanitarian aid items urgently needed by Ukraine, such as medicines, generators, and educational computers, expressed hope for additional non-lethal items in the future.

 

President Yoon said, “he would make efforts to promptly provide goods that Ukraine currently needs, such as mine clearance equipment and emergency evacuation vehicles.”

 

 

The two leaders also agreed to cooperate for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine through continuous

necessary support so that excellent Korean companies can participate in the Ukraine reconstruction project and contribute to Ukraine's post-war recovery.


Earlier Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin met with Ukraine's first lady Olena Zelenska in Seoul on May 17,

discussed the extension of humanitarian support, ways to work jointly on demising and post-war reconst-

ruction efforts, said Park's office.


In April, Korean government announced additional US$30 million humanitarian assistance for Ukraine.


In March, Korean government implemented US$10 million humanitarian assistance for Ukraine.
