The speculations are buzzing around the world suspecting that Indian government is planning to change the name of country from ‘India’ to ‘Bharat’.

The rumors spread wildly after the invitations of G20 Summit’s dinner circulated among the world leaders with the use of words "President of Bharat" instead of the customary "President of India."

On the same day, a senior spokesman of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said in a tweet, “Modi was attending a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Indonesia as the “prime minister of Bharat”. 

The words attracted the nation and became controversial, forced the nation to think is state government planning to change country’s name form ‘India’ to ‘Bharat’?

Both India and Bharat are used officially in the nation of 1.4 billion people, which has more than 20 official languages.

The Indian constitution uses both ‘India’ in English and ‘Bharat’ in Hindi. The country’s constitution states: “India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States.”

If the speculations become true the country will use name ‘Bharat’ in both English and Hindi.

But the change of India’s name to ‘Bharat’ would require an amendment to the constitution which would need to be passed by a two-thirds majority in both houses of parliament.

The world’s most popular country officially uses three names in its constitution known as India (English), Bharat (In Sanskrit) and Hindustan (Land of the Hindus in Urdu).

However, name ‘India’ is commonly used around the world.
