On June 29, 2025, the 18th Cultural Talk for Diversity was held under the theme of “LGBTQ+”, continuing the series’ mission to amplify diverse voices and foster meaningful global conversations on identity, equity, and inclusion.
Since its inception in 2023, Cultural Talk for Diversity has created a monthly space where participants from around the world gather to share personal experiences and cultural perspectives around diversity and belonging.
This month’s session featured Rain Khoo, founder and representative of TransgenderSG, a volunteer-run platform that provides critical resources and advocacy for the transgender community in Singapore. (https://transgender.sg)
□ TransgenderSG: From Resources to Research
Rain introduced the work of TransgenderSG, which began as an online hub offering information on healthcare and transition for transgender individuals.
Over time, the platform evolved to include research, education, and policy advocacy, becoming a trusted voice for LGBTQ+ rights in the region.
One of the focal points of Rain’s presentation was TransgenderSG’s recent quantitative survey of 800 individuals, including 400 transgender participants, which examined the challenges trans people face in areas such as education, employment, and healthcare.
The findings shed light on the systemic barriers confronting the transgender community in Singapore and underscored the need for structural change.
□ Social Stigma and Emerging Progress
Rain discussed the persistent social stigma and limited representation experienced by transgender individuals, while also acknowledging meaningful steps forward.
These include growing public awareness, increased engagement with government bodies, and broader recognition of research findings.
His remarks highlighted how data-driven advocacy can serve as a catalyst for social change and inclusive policymaking.
□ The Call for Inclusion and Allyship
The session also addressed ongoing challenges facing the transgender community across the Asia-Pacific region. Rain pointed to the spread of misinformation that fuels anti-trans narratives and noted the high unemployment rates affecting transgender individuals.
He called for action through the use of inclusive language, fair workplace policies, and active allyship, encouraging participants to support trans-led initiatives and approach gender identity topics with sensitivity and care.
□A Session That Informed and Moved
What made this session particularly impactful was Rain’s heartfelt storytelling and the emotional depth of his life journey. Rather than portraying change as the result of grand gestures, Rain reminded the audience that transformation often begins with quiet, consistent steps taken in the direction of truth and authenticity.
His story moved participants not only through facts and data, but through the humanity behind those numbers—inviting deeper empathy, reflection, and understanding.
The Cultural Talk for Diversity series continues to grow as a platform for authentic connection and global learning.
