Newsnomics AJAY ANGELINA reporter | The 5.6 magnitude devastating earthquake smite Cianjur town in
West Java, Indonesia on Monday Nov 21 killed at least 268, injured up to 326 in severity, damaged more than 2,200 homes, displaced more than 5,300 people, hundreds of buildings are collapsed including an Islamic
boarding school, a hospital, and other public facilities. The earthquake triggered landslides preventing victims
from reaching to the main city hospital. Many people were believed to be still trapped beneath the rubble,
leading to fears that the death toll would sharply increase.

“So many buildings crumbled and shattered, there are residents trapped in isolated places … so we are under the assumption that the number of injured and deaths will rise with time.” Java Governor Ridwan Kamil told
reporters.

The earthquake in Java was at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), rattled tall buildings in the capital, Jakarta, 60 miles away.
In the two hours after the quake, 25 aftershocks were recorded, reported by the National Agency for Disaster Management (BMKG).
The US Geological Surveys’s Pager system estimated that up to 242,000 people were exposed to “very strong shaking” and up to 978,000 people to “strong shaking”.
Ima Mafazah, the Indonesian Red Cross volunteerer, said earthquake trembling continued late into the
evening. “Until now, the earthquake still happens, but not as big as before. A minute ago, it happened again.”
“We call on people to stay outside the buildings for now as there might be potential aftershocks,” Dwikorita
Karnawati, the directory of the agency, told reporters.
This is the fourth worst earthquake of this year 2022 has left devastating effects in Indonesia.
Early On September 30, the earthquake of M 5.9 - 41 km NNE of Sibolga, Sumatra, Indonesia occurred, killed 2, injured 25 and caused moderate damage.
On February 25, the earthquake of M 6.1- 4.9 kilometers smites West Sumatra, Indonesia killed 19, injured 425, and caused Severe damage in Tigo Nagari District, Pasaman.
On January 14 the earthquake with M 6.6-88km SW of Lebuan, Java, Indonesia has smitten the damage of
3,000 buildings and injured 10.
