Pakistan-US Green Alliance to revolutionise agriculture

The future of Pakistan and US relations would be based on more interaction in the areas of trade, investment, climate change, energy and education fields.

boost bilateral trade and investment between Pakistan and Washington through a new ‘Green Alliance’ framework to meet the climate and agricultural productivity challenges during his visit to Karachi, Pakistan on

Nov 17~Nov 18. The purpose of his visit was to promote the US-Pakistan bilateral partnership in agriculture,

trade, and economy.

“The future of Pakistan and US relations would be based on more interaction in the areas of trade, investment, climate change, energy and education fields.” He spoke.

 

Blome also visited the representatives of the American Business Council at the Agha Khan University Hospital, and KFC-funded school for the deaf to strengthen the economic partnership and public health cooperation.

 

Before his visit to Lahore on Nov 12, US Blome met with representatives from All-Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) at Lahore office along with Chris Rettgers, FAS Counsellor and Kevin Ching, Economics

Counsellor to discuss how to deepen the already thriving relationship between Punjab’s textile sector and US

cotton producers. US exported $700 million in cotton to Pakistan, whose textile makers turned around and

sent $4.6 billion in textiles back to the US.

 

“One of the great economic success stories of the US-Pakistan partnership is the relationship between US

cotton and Pakistani textile producers – and this success is centered in Punjab Province,” Blome said “the two-way trade in cotton and textiles was $5.3 billion in 2021, which is more than half of the $8.9 billion trade

between our nations” added.

 

APTMA, Senior vice Chairman Kamran Arshad has made a detailed presentation about the strength of the

textile industry in Pakistan. He told USA is Pakistan’s largest trade partner with a total bilateral trade of $9.85

billion in 2021-2022. According to him, total exports of Pakistan to the USA stood at $6.8 billion against total

imports of $3.0 billion from the USA. The Unite States is the largest source of foreign direct investment in

Pakistan coupled with remittance of $3.1 billion from USA to Pakistan, he added.

 

Blome also met the officials of the Corteva - US agrisciences company and learned how US hybrid seed corn

is contributing to Punjab’s farmers’ yields and incomes. He told; US is working with Winrock International on $20 million agricultural development project to strengthen the agricultural sector in Southern Punjab.

Masood Khan, Pakistan Ambassador to the United States said the recent momentum in Pak-US relations has

opened a series of opportunities to strengthen Pak-US cooperation in critical areas including the agriculture

sector while addressing a webinar on ‘Pak-US Cooperation in Agriculture Sector on Nov 21, hosted by Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad.


“Pak-US ‘Green Alliance’ can potentially serve to revolutionize the agriculture sector of Pakistan with the help

of US expertise and would also significantly help in cementing the goodwill created between the two

countries by Green Revolution in past,” he said.


The US government is dedicated to expanding the full range of US-Pakistan relationship including education,

people-to-people ties, clean energy, and health-related cooperation,” the embassy said. 


“Together we can promote a more stable, secure, and prosperous future for both our nations.”


It is a big opportunity for Pakistan to increase its intentions for the future development through a new ‘Green Alliance’ framework to meet the climate and agricultural productivity challenges that can strongly ties the

Pak-US bilateral relationship.
