Newsnomics AJAY ANGELINA reporter | South Korean, Ministry of Justice is promoting the fast-track program for permanent residency and naturalization of outstanding foreign talents in science and technology from
2023.
"Fast Track for Permanent Residency/Naturalization of Outstanding Talents in Science and Technology" is established for the foreign talents to quickly acquire permanent residency and nationality in Korean society after obtaining a degree and successfully settle down, especially for foreigners who have obtained master’s or doctorate degrees from specialized science and engineering institutions such as KAIST (KAIST, DGIST, GIST, UNIST, UST).
In the past, it took more than 6 years for excellent foreign residents with master's or doctoral degrees in Korea to acquire permanent residency or nationality through complicated procedures of 4 to 5 steps.
*Step 4-5: Master's/Doctorate → Professional → Residence → Permanent Residency → General Naturalization.
Now on in 2023, Degree holders can acquire permanent residency and nationality within 3 years by following 3-step procedure.
*Step 3: Master's/Doctorate → Residence → Permanent Residency/Special Naturalization.
Fast Track is a system introduced at the request of academic circles such as KAIST to provide stable domestic settlement opportunities for foreign students with excellent science and technology. Resident qualification based on the track of residence, permanent residence, and special naturalization are acquired for completion through full-scale implementation in 2023.
Han Dong-Hoon, the minister of justice said, “We plan to continue to promote measures to encourage outstanding foreign nationals who can contribute to the development of Korea to permanent residency and naturalization, including this fast track for permanent residency and naturalization of outstanding talents in science and technology.”
Going forward, the Ministry of Justice will provide multilateral support so that excellent foreign residents can settle down and develop in Korean society, such as providing correct information on permanent residency and naturalization through online communication platform operation and customized settlement and support services.
