South Korea and UK announces a joint declaration on their agreement to continue the cooperation in the
UK’s new nuclear power plant project and exchange in offshore wind power, hydrogen and other clean energy areas between the two countries.
South Korean Trade, Industry & Energy Ministet Lee Chang-yang, and Grant Shapps, the UK’s Secretary of
State for Energy Security and Net Zero held a meeting at the Lotte Hotel Seoul on April 10, to discuss clean
energy exchange and cooperation in energy security and climate change response.
Minister Lee said, “Korea is making multi-faceted policy efforts for energy transition in shifting towards carbon neutral on the principle of stable power supply.”
“Korea “plans to expand renewable energy to appropriate and attainable levels while utilizing nuclear energy, a zero-carbon power source, on the premise of securing stability.” He added.
The Korean and UK delegations also discussed the various measures for nuclear energy cooperation includes: design, construction, main equipment production, decommissioning, nuclear fuel and small modular reactors (SMRs).
“South Korea’s strengths lie in design, construction and main equipment production, while the UK’s lie in de-
commissioning and nuclear fuel,” adding that “complementary cooperation is possible.” aid Minister Lee.
The two countries agreed to accelerate discussions regarding Korea’s participation in UK’s new nuclear power plant project (GBN).
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Shapps during his visit to South Korea intends to visit the Singori nuclear power plant and Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD).
South Korea and UK also discussed offshore wind power, hydrogen and other clean energy cooperation areas.
Minister Lee expressed his anticipation for “expansion of the two countries’ scope of collaboration” by com-
bining Korea’s manufacturing capacity and UK’s offshore wind power know-how.
He stated, “Korea has technological prowess in hydrogen application, having harnessed it to distribute first-rate hydrogen cars,” and that “the UK retains leading technology in solid polymer electrolysis (SPE) and hydrogen
production.”
South Korea and UK conveyed that the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the establishment of Korea-UK
diplomatic relations, were a best opportunity for both the countries to share values, cooperation measures,
and valuable agreements in the future.
