Newsnomics AJAY ANGELINA reporter | South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has departed for the US to make his state visit on Monday to hold a summit with U.S. President Joe Biden and commemorate the 70th anniversary of the two countries' Bilateral alliance.
"President Yoon and President Biden will celebrate the achievements of the alliance over the past 70 years and will exchange deep views about the future direction of the alliance," said Kim Tae Hyo, South Korea's principal deputy national security adviser.
President Yoon's state visit to the US consists of six-days starts from Monday April 24 to Saturday April 29, 2023 is scheduled to discuss a range of topics such as: strengthening the U.S. commitment to defending South Korea with its nuclear and conventional military capabilities, deeper and broader partnerships in supply chains and economic security, furthermore cooperation in cyber security and space.
President Yoon and Biden are expected to raise similar voices on the issues of Ukraine War and tensions in the Taiwan Strait, to which Russia and China are showing sensitive reactions.
President Yoon in his recent interview expressed that South Korea may provide military aid to Ukraine by
saying “his government might not "insist only on humanitarian or financial support" in the event of a large-
scale attack on civilians or a "situation the international community cannot condone".
Also, South Korea absolutely opposes attempts to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait by force.
On April 27, President Yoon will deliver a speech before a joint session of the U.S. Congress, and will have lunch with Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken according to the report.
President Yoon is also going to attend the forums and business round tables arranged by business leaders of South Korea and the US, following the visit of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
Next day, Yoon will deliver a speech at Harvard University after visiting the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
President Yoon will return back to his homeland on April 29, 2023.
Yoon is the first South Korean president to pay a state visit to the US since Lee Myung-bak (South Korea’s 10th president) in 2011, and the second foreign leader to do so under the administration of Joe Biden.
