A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast city of Donghae located 182 km east of Seoul, south
Korea at 6:27 am on Monday, May 15,2023, reported by the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA).
The epicenter of earthquake noted by the weather agency is 37.99 degrees north latitude and 129.72 degrees east longitude, with the estimated depth of 32 km.
The earthquake occurs into the waters of east coast in Donghae that is said to be the strongest quake to
occur on the Korean Peninsula so far this year.
A total of 18 tremors are being felt in Donghae and two nearby cities, but no damage has been reported,
according to the fire authorities.
South Korea raised its earthquake alert level by one notch from "Blue" to "Yellow", as three quakes are
detected in a specific area within a short range of time, and calls for a cooperation between several govern
ment bodies on the issue, said the official statement of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo.
PM. Han urged the Interior Ministry to inspect the nation's resilience against earthquakes, called on the
industry, science and land ministers to monitor the operation of critical infrastructure for power supply, tele
communication and traffic.
