The Ministry of Justice erected a memorial tower at the entrance of Seoul Southern Correctional Facility located in Cheonwang-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul on Monday June 5.
The unveiling ceremony was held to commemorate the noble sacrifice and devotion of prison guards who sacrificed their lives for the country and to reflect on the professional ethics that kept their duty to the end even in moments of crisis.
About 100 people attended the unveiling ceremony including Han Dong-hoon the minister of Justice, the representative of the bereaved family of the prison guard who died, 6.25 war veterans, Kwon Sun-jeong, head of the Planning and Coordination Office, Shin Yong-hae, head of corrections headquarters, Lee Tae-hee, returning Korean veterans, the president of the Correctional Fellowship Association, Hwang Woo-jong, the head of the Correctional Committee Central Council, the head of the regional correctional office, and the head of a correctional institution in the Gyeongin region.
The memorial tower for fallen prison guards was built under the direction of Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon to commemorate public officials who devoted themselves for the country and remember the spirit of their sacrifices.
A total of 167 names of prison guards who died during the Korean War including Guards Hong-Ok Kim, Yong-Su Hwang, Chief Do-Ryong Kim, and Hak-Jong Woo, were engraved.
The names of other 74 were newly confirmed among them during the construction of the Chunghon Tower, adding to the significance of this event.
