The number of Russian refugee applicants has been acceded to 2,400 in the first half of this year, double than the previous ratio counted 1,038 in the last year.
About 2,400 Russians applied for asylum in South Korea asking government to accept them were overwhelmingly outnumbered, even compared to the refugee applicants of other nationalities.
Total 8,348 refugee applications were received in Korea between January and June of this year, out of which Russians accounted for the most with 2,464 (29.5%) said the “Statistical Monthly Report on Immigration and Foreigners Policy for June 2023” released by the Ministry of Justice on the 27 July, 2023.
Total 2048 Russian refuge seekers mention the most common reason for applying for refugee status was “political opinions.” It seems that this has nothing to do with the situation in which Russian men who are subject to conscription continue to escape.
In September 2022, Russia issued a compulsory mobilization order to gather 300,000 troops to participate in the war in Ukraine, and even after that, there is a steady possibility that the authorities will recruit additional troops.
A total of 3,347 refugee applications were reviewed in the first half of the year, of which only 43 were recognized as refugees and 41 were granted humanitarian stay permits.
The refugee recognition rate is 1.3%, and the protection rate is 2.5% according to the Ministry of Justice, south Korea.
