At least five people including Muslim Naib imam of the mosque and two policemen were killed and more than 50 injured after the Hindu-Muslim clashes broke out in Haryana, the state of India on Tuesday August 1, 2023.

The imam was put on death by the mob of 70 to 80 people who ablaze the Anjuman Jama Masjid situated in India a day earlier on Monday night into neighboring Gurugram, also known as Gurgaon, shares a border with New Delhi

“Some of the offenders who were involved in burning the mosque have been identified and appropriate legal actions will be taken soon”, said the local police.

Manohar Lal Khattar, Haryana’s Chief Minister condemned the incident in Nuh and said, "the guilty will not be spared at any cost, strictest action will be taken against them."

Hindu- Muslim violence erupted after a religious procession, called 'Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra,' led by the right-wing Hindu groups, Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad passed by a Muslim-majority area in the Nuh region, 50km away from the Capital New Delhi.

"The procession was meant to move from one temple to another but clashes broke out between two groups on the way, which resulted in the death of four people," Krishan Kumar, spokesperson of Nuh police.

According to the Indian media reports, the clashes began after a video was posted on social media by Monu Manesar, who announced plans to join the religious procession in the video — seen as a direct challenge to the local Muslim community. Monu Manesar, a member of Bajrang Dal is a suspect of murdering two Muslim men whose bodies were set on fire in February 2023.

As soon as the clashes occurred the police took quick action, used teargas and fired rounds into the air to disperse crowds gathered in the areas of Delhi suburbs of Gurugram, Faribad and Palwal.

The police also banned assemblies of four or more people in the violence-hit areas and the government suspended internet service in the entire area.

The Haryana state government announced the banning of all mobile internet and SMS services in Nuh district until August 2, "in order to stop the spread of misinformation and rumors through various social media platform.

Hindu-Muslim clashes are the reason of dividing two states into modern-day, Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan since 1947.
