'Khanun' Typhoon influenced entire South Korea

Khanun caused flooding, facility destruction,fall of trees, landslides, electricity outrage, transportation disruption etc.

Typhoon Khanun, which passed through South Korea caused severe damage across the country on Thursday morning left one dead, one missing, over 10,000 displaced while bringing continuous heavy rains and strong winds.


Reports of damage continued throughout on Thursday, as the entire country came under the influence of the typhoon.


The Daegu Fire Department reported 67-year-old man found dead in a stream in Daegu city at around 12:33 p.m. 


Another man in his 60s was swept away at around 1:45 p.m.in the same city of Daegu.


In addition, a woman in her 30s was struck by a falling tree and taken to the hospital in Buyeo, South Chung cheong Province. 


Dozens of people after being trapped on flooded roads and rivers were rescued across the country.


A total of 10,641 people from 7,797 households nationwide were temporarily evacuated to shelters as of 11 am on Thursday.


Over 14,000 people in some 110 cities, districts and counties across the country had been evacuated especially in North Gyeongsang Province accounted for the most with over 9,200 evacuees according to the Central Disaster Safety and Countermeasure Headquarters.


Over 43,000 households across the country experienced electricity outrage according to the report of 7 pm.


Over 400 years old pine tree-- designated natural monument No. 357 with the height of 13.1 meters and a circumference of 4.05 meters was reported partially damaged due to the effect of strong winds in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province at around 6 pm.


According to the Korea Airport authorities, some 360 flights were canceled at 14 airports nationwide, including over 200 in connection with Jeju Island and the mainland.


The Korea Railroad Corp., Korail, reported the suspension of about 161 high-speed trains and 251 regular trains.


Almost 1,600 kindergartens, elementary, middle and high schools nationwide were forced to change their normal class schedules to avoid the impact of Typhoon.


47.4 percent of educational institutions out of 3,333 across the nation that had ongoing classes, have modified their schedules due to the Typhoon.


As of 9 p.m. KMA report, the Khanun reached some 50 kilometers east of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province and kept moving northbound.


In addition, the KMA reported that “it will continue to rain in the central part of the Korean Peninsula until Friday and until early Saturday in the northwestern part of Gyeonggi Province.


The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters sent out safety alert messages continually on Thursday to take safety measures, urging everyone to stay indoors as much as possible and not to approach rivers, coastal areas, valleys and steep slopes.


Khanun landed on the mainland in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, at about 9:20 a.m., and passed 30 kilometers southeast of Chungju, North Chungcheong Province at 4 p.m., moving at a speed of 31 kilometers per hour according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).


After effecting South Korea nationwide on Thursday, The Khanun Typhoon dissipated after reaching the vicinity of North Korea's capital, Pyongyang, on early morning of Friday at around 6 a.m. according to the weather agency.
