On September 9~10, India held the 18th G20 summit in New Delhi, under the Presidency of Nerander Modi with the focus on the theme, ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ that affirms the value of human, animal, plant, and microorganisms and their disconnectedness on planet Earth and in the wider universe.

The G20 summit in Delhi surprised many by achieving consensus among world leaders, despite lingering disagreements regarding the Ukraine conflict and climate change action.

The first achievement affirms that the G20 countries extended a warm welcome to African union as a newest sole member of G20, highlighted the significance of India's presidency in amplifying the voices of the Global South.

"With everyone's approval, I request the African Union Chairperson to take his seat as a permanent G20 member," PM Narender Modi said by welcoming the AU at G20.

Previously, G20 was comprising 19 countries and the European union, now accepted African union consisting 55 members (excluding six junta-ruled nations), boasts a population of 1.4 and the collective GDP of $3 trillion.

The 19 countries consisting 85% GDP are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, and the US.

The other achievement shows that for the first time, G20 countries declared tripling global renewable energy capacity and acknowledged the need to peak emissions before 2030 to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The G20 Leaders’ Declaration from New Delhi acknowledged that scale of climate action, and its implementation, continued to “remain insufficient”, and recognized that the financial resources now needed to galvanize climate action in order to meet Paris Agreement objectives ran into “trillions of dollars”, not billions.

“We commit to urgently accelerate our actions to address environmental crises and challenges including climate change,” the G20 Leaders’ Declaration said.

Another big takeaway of the declaration was the launch of the Global Biofuels Alliance, one of the priorities under India’s G20 Presidency that will be leaded by the Brazil, India, and the United States, as leading biofuel producers and consumers along with other interested countries.

Another major success was the announcement launch of a mega India-Middle East-Europe shipping and railway connectivity corridor (IMEE EC) by India, the US, Saudi Arabia and the European Union that will encourage and provide impetus to economic development through enhanced connectivity and economic integration between Asia, West Asia/Middle East and Europe.

The Indian Prime minister Nerander Modi made a renewed push for expansion of the UN Security Council and reforms in all global institutions to reflect world’s “new realities.”

India will officially continue G20 presidency until November 30 represents over two-and-half months were left for its tenure as the head of the grouping.

Brazil officially will take over the mantle of the presidency of the elite grouping on December 1 this year.
