The UK government rushes to give refuge to hundreds of eligible Afghan nationals following the crackdown on undocumented foreign nationals residing in Pakistan started looking for accommodations to facilitate these refugees and will then arrange flights for their relocation.
Around 3,000 Afghan nationals, many of whom worked for the British army were move out to be provided residence in the UK following the Afghan Taliban’s takeover of Kabul in August 2021, but suffered with delays due to housing issues in UK.
Since last year, they have been stuck in Islamabad when the UK government promised them to arrange their flights and housing in the Britain before flying towards UK.
They started residing in Islamabad hotels, one of which was raided and investigated by the police during the ongoing operation. Some Afghan nationals with expired visas were arrested and released only after the intervention of the UK High Commission’s staff, reported by the Independent News.
Further, the report mentions, around 2,300 in Pakistan are eligible for the UK Ministry of Defense resettlement scheme, while another 700 are eligible to be brought to the UK on a Foreign Office.
Around 20-30 Afghan families has already traveled to UK last week on commercial flights and more will be moved soon.
The UK authorities said, “We will continue to honor our commitments to bring eligible Afghans to the UK, and we are issuing new visas to people in Afghanistan and other countries for resettlement here.”
