India deeply shocked Qatar sentences 8 Indian nationals to death

The eight Indian nationals are retired Indian Navy personnel accused of spying on behalf of Israel against Qatar.

It was “deeply shocked” by the news that eight Indian nationals have been sentenced to death by Qatar authorities, said the India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday.

 

New Delhi said that we are deeply shocked with the verdict passed by the Qatari court and waiting for the detailed judgement.


It attaches "high importance to this case" and will "take up the verdict with Qatari authorities", the Indian government showed its concern about the case.


Indian government also mentioned that it would "not be appropriate to make any further comments at this stage" due to the "confidential nature of the proceedings."


The eight Indian national employees of Al Dahra Company in Qatar accused of spying on behalf of Israel against Qatar has been arrested in August 2022.

 

According to the reports, Al Dahra is a private Company that offers training and other services to the defense and security agencies of Qatar.

 

The eight nationals sentenced to death are retired Indian Navy personnel named -- Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vashisht, Commander Purenendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal and Sailor ragesh as per Economic Times News.

 

An Indian Foreign ministry official, including External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, earlier said that the exact nature of the charges against the eight Indian nationals are "not entirely clear."


A spokesperson for India's foreign ministry did not respond to a request seeking comment. 


More than 800,000 Indian citizens are living and working in Qatar.

 

Qatar has yet to release any public information on the arrest and sentence.
