Taiwan authorities have decided to hire Indian migrant workers in order to meet with the labor shortages in the fields of manufacturing, construction, agriculture, and fishery industries.

According to the media reports, Taiwan's Labor Ministry notified that the “MOU, memorandum of understanding has been signed between both other's de facto embassies in Taipei and Delhi, but implementation details will still need to be worked out.”

As per Taiwan News, the memorandum of understanding on labor cooperation was signed between the Taipei Economic, Cultural Center in India and the India Taipei Association via video conference.

Taiwan will control the number of Indian workers allowed in and the industries to be assigned, the labor ministry said in a statement on Friday.

India, on the other hand has committed to recruiting and training the employees, according to the needs of Taiwan, according to the statement.

Taiwan Ministry of Labor explained that the demand for migrant workers is increasing every year because the demand for labor in Taiwan's manufacturing, construction, agriculture and other industries continues to expand that is difficult to fulfill itself within Taiwan.

“The quality of Indian labor is stable and they are well considered” said Taiwan labor ministry by adding “A small-scale pilot scheme will start first, and if that goes well, more Indian workers will be allowed to work depending on the results.”

The Ministry of Labor did not disclose the demanding quantity of Indian migrant workers, but some media outlets reported that 100,000 Indian workers would come to Taiwan, which Taiwanese authorities denied.

Baushuan Ger, Taiwan’s Ambassador to India who met with Lalduhoma, the Chief Minister of Mizoram on Feb. 12. said on X that, the “fruitful" meeting included talks on labor mobility, education, and agricultural cooperation. “Exciting opportunities ahead!"

According to the Reuters, although India and Taiwan, like many other countries, do not have diplomatic ties.

They just have close commercial relationships as the Indian government is making efforts to attract Taiwanese technology companies to invest and manufacture in India.

Currently, Taiwan relies on about 700,000 migrant workers mainly from Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, primarily working in the fields of manufacturing, housework for the elderly.
