South Korean government launched the “Agricultural and Fishery Foreign Workforce Support TF” in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, in order to effectively respond to the problem of labor shortage in farming and fishing villages, and the signing ceremony in this regard was held on Monday, April 8, 2024.
“Agricultural and Fishery Foreign Workforce Support TF” is launched to create policy synergy effects by bringing together practitioners from the Ministry of Justice, which oversees the foreign seasonal worker system, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, which are ministries that require manpower in the agriculture and fisheries sectors to focus on their tasks.
According to the ministry of Justice, the ‘Support TF’ plans in the future will support other introduction of foreign workers in the agricultural and fishing fields, such as seasonal workers, based on accurate demand by establishing a forecast and analysis system for human resources in agricultural and fishing villages, and comp rehensively review and improve problems in the system operation process.
Minister Park Seong-jae said at the sign-laying ceremony, “This is the same in the agricultural and fishing sectors, but when introducing foreign manpower, it is necessary to accurately predict demand rather than focusing only on expanding the introduction.”
“Based on this, we must minimize infringements on domestic employment and reduce illegal employment and incentives for illegal employment.”
In addition, “It is also important to have institutional support to ensure that foreign seasonal workers are not subject to human rights violations” he said.
The Ministry of Justice by launching the ‘Support TF’, will listen more closely to the voices of farming and fishing communities and make active efforts to resolve the labor shortage problem in the agricultural and fishing industries.
