Gimpo International Airport in Seoul, South Korea is going to host a new Urban Air Mobility (UAM) hub by
2030, said the city’s local government.
A new Urban Air Mobility (UAM) hub project will transform the airport into new hub for industries and economy, similar to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and Singapore’s Changi Airport.
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, “a basic plan for the $2.2bn project would be completed
by 2025 and the construction is expected to begin by 2027, depending on planning approvals.”
By 2030, the government is planning to build the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) landing pads and inter modal transfer facilities in and around Gimpo Airport, marking the beginning of UAM era.
Starting in 2033, it will combine the existing urban airport infrastructure with UAM landing pads and new inter-modal transfer facilities, like Super-Bus Rapid Transit (S-BRT).
The site will also present a range of non-UAM-related infrastructure including education facilities, high-tech
industrial buildings, studio apartments, and tech clusters to attract local businesses as reported by the Korea
Times.
The new project will also enhance airport functions like passenger and cargo transportation while expanding high-tech industry clusters for the future.
A total of KRW 2.964 trillion, including KRW 10 billion from the national and city governments, KRW 49 billion from the public sector including Korea Airport Corporation, and KRW 2.905 trillion from the private sector will be invested in the airport to transform it into a high-tech industrial base for future mobility, including UAM,
S-BRT and urban rail transit.
Gimpo high tech plan aims to create 30,000 new jobs and generate KRW 4 trillion in economic benefits.
