S.Korean literature exhibition for foreigners at Seoul

"It will serve as an opportunity to inform foreign tourists visiting Seoul of the globalization trend of our literature."

The government of the Republic of Korea is holding outdoor libraries at Seoul Plaza, Gwanghwamun Square and Cheonggye Stream, a popular destination for foreign tourists, as part of its efforts to promote Korean literature to the book lovers from multiple countries.


The city government plans to display 693 translated books of Korean authors at the three outdoor libraries over the next two months said the Seoul Metropolitan Government on Thursday.


The outdoor books exhibition begins with donated books from the Literature Translation Institute of Korea features Han Kang's "The Vegetarian," which won the Man Booker International Prize in 2016, as well as several other literary works.


The exhibition display presents the copies of 59 Korean novels translated into 33 different languages, including English, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic and Greek.


Until 22nd, the Seoul Plaza will display attractive works such as Ma Young-shin's "Mothers," the winner of the U.S. Harvey Award, and Han Kang's "Do Not Say Goodbye," the winner of the French Medici Award, through a special curated books well as "Do Not Bid Farewell" by Han Kang, "Our Happy Time” by Gong Ji-young and "Seven Years' Night” by Jeong Yu-jeong, which won awards for foreign literature.


The library installed at Gwanghwamun includes award-winning works such as "The Vegetarian" and Kim Young-ha's "The Diary of a Murderer."


Best-selling Korean novels such as "School Nurse Ahn Eun-young" by Jeong Se-rang, "My Brilliant Life" by Kim Ae-ran, "Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop" by Hwang Bo-reum and "Almond” by Son Won-pyeong will also be on displayed at Cheonggye Stream section.


"This exhibition will serve as an opportunity to closely inform foreign tourists visiting Seoul about the globalization trend of our literature," said Oh Ji-eun, head of Seoul Metropolitan Library.
