S.Korea's 13 special disastrous areas caused by heavy rainfall

13 designated areas are eligible for government's financial support in recovery work, relief funds for victims and other benefits.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol designated 13 areas severely hit by the deadly downpours caused

widespread disaster and forced many people to displace from their houses.


The special disaster zones include the central cities of Cheongju and Gongju, Yecheon, North Gyeongsang

Province; Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province; and Iksan, North Jeolla Province, reported by the authorities.


13 designated areas are eligible for government's financial support in recovery work, relief funds for victims and other benefits in order to help victims' prompt return to everyday life based on the preliminary surveys have been completed by the government.


"Damage surveys are difficult in some areas due to continued downpours and flooding. For areas that were

not included this time, damage surveys will be quickly completed, and in cases they meet the criteria, we plan to make additional designations as special disaster zones.” said Lee Do-woon, the presidential spokesperson.


"We intend to promptly complete damage investigations in areas that have not been declared this time and add them to the list of special disaster areas if they meet the declaration criteria,” Lee said.


President Yoon instructed Han Chang-seob, Interior Minister to make all-out efforts with relevant authorities to swiftly provide recovery assistance and prevent additional casualties.


Yoon also instructed Chung Hwang-keun , the Agriculture Minister to assist affected farms damaged by the

continuous heavy rainfall, to manage their supply and demand of corps. 


Recently, at least 44 people died, 6 missing 6, 35 injured, 16,000 residents have since evacuated to temporary shelters, 7,839 were still unable to return home, 421 houses have been flooded or destroyed, over a thousand public facilities have been damaged, 30,000 hectares of farmland, and about 693,000 livestock has been affected by the disastrous downpours reported by the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters.
