Under the theme "Food Culture." guest speakers Amy Wan Rotos (Malaysia) and Saehee Chang (Korean American) shared personal stories about food and its cultural significance.

The 13th Cultural Talk for Diversity & Inclusion was held online on January 25, 2026.

 

Under the theme "Food Culture." guest speakers Amy Wan Rotos (Malaysia) and Saehee Chang (Korean American) shared personal stories about food and its cultural significance.

 

The session was filled with lively discussions about Korean and Malaysian cuisines, exploring their diversity and cultural influence.

 

Amy’s Insights on Food and CultureAmy began by sharing her deep passion for food and its role in shaping her family’s life. She fondly mentioned her daughters, whose first word was "mum mum" (food), and how her love for food stems from her mother’s influence.

 

As an advocate for Malaysian cuisine, Amy highlighted iconic dishes like Nasi Lemak, Char Kway Teow, and Roti Canai, explaining how Malaysia’s multicultural heritage enriches its food.

 

She also discussed the integration of Korean elements, such as ginseng, into Malaysian cooking.

 

 

Amy emphasized the communal joy of sharing food and invited participants to experience Malaysian culinary traditions firsthand. Her insights underscored food’s profound impact on mood and community building.

 

Saehee Chang’s Insights on Korean Food and CultureSaehee Chang shared her passion for Korean cuisine, highlighting its diversity from rice and kimchi to street and temple foods.

 

She discussed how Korean food has gained global popularity through platforms like Netflix and emphasized its role in fostering cultural connections. Drawing from her personal experiences, Saehee recounted teaching healthy Korean cooking to underserved communities in Milwaukee and cooking for refugees in Germany, including Ukrainians.

 

She emphasized the importance of food presentation as a way of showing respect, a value she learned from her mother.

 

Saehee shared her journey of adapting to life in Germany by embracing new ingredients while maintaining her culinary roots.

 

She also reflected on her identity as a Korean American, stressing the importance of celebrating one’s heritage. Saehee’s work includes wellness culinary programs for global companies, showcasing the power of food to build bridges across cultures and create meaningful connections.
